School Description
Tashkent International School (TIS), an IB World School, is a private, not for profit, independent, co-educational day school governed by a Board of Directors elected and appointed from the parent community. Established in 1994, TIS currently serves the needs of an expanding international population, including the children of the expatriate business and diplomatic communities. TIS offers an American based international curriculum from Pre-Kindergarten - grade 12. TIS is an IB World School offering: the full International Baccalaureate Diploma in grades 11 - 12 and is a school for the Middle Years Program for grades 6 - 10 and the Primary Years Program for Kindergarten – grade 5.



 



Campus and Facilities

The school is housed in a recently remodeled facility on a 13 acre wooded campus with beautiful landscaped grounds. It is only eight minutes from the city centre in a quiet, suburban location with full-time security and an enclosed campus. There are large, landscaped and wooded recreation areas with park benches, basketballs courts, a running track, soccer field, a pond, gardens and beach volleyball. There is also a separate playground available for the kindergarten and our preschool students. The facility features large, climate controlled classrooms, handicap access, a spacious library, auditorium, two sports halls, three computer labs, and three science labs—all with internet access and access to computer terminals. The Tashkent International Medical Clinic is also housed on campus and, at time of writing, plans are underway for a new elementary building scheduled for completion in 2010.

Faculty

In school year 2009-2010, there are forty-three full-time faculty members, and thirteen part-time faculty members. Sixteen faculty members are U.S. citizens; the remaining faculty is from 13 other countries, including twenty-four host country nationals. Forty-five per cent of the faculty have advanced degrees including three Doctorates. The School employs twelve teacher aides.

Student Body

There are a total of 369 students enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12, including 162 secondary school students. The Class of 2010 has 24 seniors. Approximately 14 % of the student body are U.S. citizens, 19 % are host country nationals, and 67 % are from 36 other countries. The average class size is 15:1.

Curriculum

The school offers the full IB Curriculum; the Primary Years Program (PYP) to students in grades K-5; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 6 to 10 and the Diploma Programme (DP) to students in grades 11 and 12. Instruction is in English and takes advantage of small class sizes and the diverse educational backgrounds of the students. Courses include English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Physical Education, Art, Technology and Fine Arts. English as a second language is provided to grades 2-9. Russian is offered as a foreign language and to native speakers in grades 2-12. Other foreign languages offered in secondary school include French and Korean. The School offers a comprehensive after-school activities program which includes: the IB Diploma CAS Program, Model United Nations, community service, student council, SAT/ACT and college preparation, instrumental music training, several bands, art, chess club, and the major sports such as gymnastics, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and karate. The School’s programs and its graduates are recognized to meet the highest standards of international education.
