The Tashkent International School, Uzbekistan

seeks a

Principal of the Secondary School

Commencing August 1, 2011

The School

Tashkent International School (TIS) was founded as a private, not-for-profit, independent co-educational day school in 1994 by the then United Nations Representative together with twelve Ambassadors and the support of the Office of Overseas Schools of the United States State Department to provide an international curriculum in English for the children of the Diplomatic and international business families in Tashkent. The school is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the IB Diploma in grades 11 to 12, a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme for grades 6 - 10 and the Primary Years Programme for Pre-School to Grade 5. TIS is governed by a Board of Directors elected and appointed from the parent community. We are known for our small class sizes, good facilities, supportive parents, motivated students and professional faculty. TIS maintains a comprehensive website, containing numerous documents and reports that potential applicants will find useful at http://www.tashschool.org/.

The Secondary School (Grades 6-12) has approximately 200 students enrolled, each grade level having two class sections. The Secondary Leadership Team is composed of the Secondary Principal, the MYP and DP coordinators, College and School Counselors, and Learning Support Specialist.

Campus and Facilities

The school is housed in a new facility on a wooded campus with beautiful spacious grounds. It is only eight minutes from the city centre in a quiet, suburban location with full-time security and an enclosed campus. There are large, landscaped recreation areas with park benches, basketballs courts, a running track, soccer field, ponds, and gardens. The facility features large, climate controlled classrooms, handicap access, a spacious library, auditorium, two sports halls, three computer labs, and three science labs—all with internet access. The campus grounds offer WiFi to students, teachers and parents. The Tashkent International Medical Clinic, an excellent private medical clinic, occupies a facility on campus. The clinic provides medical and emergency coverage for staff, students and most of the international community in Tashkent. The school has recently acquired land adjacent to our existing property into order to build a new Elementary School building, for projected completion by August 2011. There are also plans to build a cafeteria, a Secondary Fine Arts Centre and re-model the existing school building for Secondary use.

Faculty

TIS employs 48 full-time and 13 part-time faculty members. Thirteen of the full-time teachers are U.S. citizens; the remaining 63% of faculty are from 13 other countries. Forty-five percent of the faculty has advanced degrees, including 4 doctorates. Teachers enjoy an excellent benefits package and savings potential. Tashkent is a safe and interesting place to live with a fascinating history and cultural heritage. Professional development is actively encouraged and supported with additional, significant opportunities outside Uzbekistan at regional conferences and IB workshops. Most teachers tend to stay for multiple contracts.

The Student Body

The School has grown rapidly over the past years, averaging 15%, increase per annum, to a total enrolment of 425 for the academic year 2010-11. Approximately 15% of the students are U.S. citizens, 20% host country nationals, and 65 % from 30 other countries. The average class size is fifteen students.

Curriculum and Accreditation

The Secondary School offers the IBMYP and IBDP with instruction in English; the MYP authorization visit will occur this academic year. English as a Second Language is provided to students needing additional help and students are actively encouraged, wherever possible to focus on mother-tongue learning. The academic program prepares all students for universities around the world with over 80% completing the full IB Diploma; there was a 100% pass rate in the Class of 2009. Extra- and co-curricular activities are an essential part of TIS life. Varsity sport teams include: soccer, basketball and volleyball. Other events include: Model United Nations, Student Council, Yearbook, Community Service, IB CAS program activities, recreational sports and various academic and school spirit competitions. TIS is the only international school in Central Asia to be accredited by both the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Colleges and Schools and the only IB School in Uzbekistan.

Active Parental Support

TIS has an extremely active and supportive PTA that organizes a host of events and activities for the students and community throughout the year. PTA sponsored events have helped create garden and new play areas on campus. Scottish Dancing Nights, Pot Luck Supper Socials, Spring Bazaar and a Holiday Ball are just some of the events they sponsor and help coordinate. TIS is a community school, the heart and soul of our international community. Many families and companies choose to relocate to Tashkent, or extend their posting, because of the school.

The School Board

The Tashkent International School Board is made up of eleven voting members, including the representative of the Ambassador of the United States. Any parent of a student at TIS is eligible to stand for election to the School Board. Board members serve for two years and elections take place at the Annual General Meeting of the Parent Association which occurs each year in April/ May.

The Country and City

Two-thirds of Uzbekistan is steppe or desert; however, in the east, Uzbekistan tilts upward towards the mountains. Tashkent is in eastern Uzbekistan, located in an oasis near the Chirchik River in a cotton and fruit growing region; it is a very attractive and vibrant city. The roots of the rich Uzbek culture shine through Tashkent's architecture, museums and even the metro stations; the Uzbeks are very friendly. Nightlife in Tashkent is evolving at an incredible pace. There are many nightclubs as well as teahouses and cafes. The Uzbek food is unique and very tasty! Tashkent is a major industrial and transportation center and was the largest city of the former Soviet Central Asia. It has industries producing machinery, cotton and silk textiles, chemicals, tobacco products, and furniture. A center of Uzbek culture, Tashkent has several large libraries and is the seat of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences and numerous other institutions of higher learning. The first mention of Tashkent dates from the 7th century AD, although it was probably founded by the 1st century BC. The city was conquered, successively, by the Arabs in the 8th century, by Genghis Khan in the early 13th century, and by Tamerlane in the 14th century. Uzbekistan was annexed by Russia in 1865, and a new Russian city was built around the older town. This city, whose name means "Stone Fortress", has the look of a modern metropolis. Little remains of the old city due to a series of earthquakes over the years and subsequent rebuilding. The population of Tashkent is about 2,400,000.

Climate

Uzbekistan has an extreme continental climate. Temperatures in December average -8°C (18°F); however, extreme fluctuations can take temperatures as low as -35°C (-31°F). During the summer temperatures can reach 45°C (113°F) and above. Humidity is low. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to October) are in general the most pleasant times to travel.
