Introduction

Students in grades 6-10 are at a critical stage of development.  They are undergoing dramatic physical, personal, social and intellectual changes.  They are also becoming more aware of the wider world around them.   It’s a time of questioning and challenging, which can be exciting, confusing and a bit frightening all at the same time.   The Middle Years Program aims to help students through this crucial time by fostering a sense of belonging and a positive attitude to learning.

The program:
• is inquiry based
• encourages international-mindedness
• makes connections between the different subjects to each other and real-life
• supports the development of communication skills in both mother-tongue and additional languages
• is holistic and focuses on the development of the whole child (physical, personal, social and intellectual)

Curriculum:  The MYP does not prescribe a particular curriculum.  Rather, it is a framework or means of delivering and assessing the curriculum already in place.  There are eight different subject groups and connections are made between the subject groups through the Areas of Interaction (AOI).

Subject groups:
• Language A (English)
• Language B (French and Russian)
• Humanities
• Mathematics
• Sciences
• Physical Education
• Technology
• Arts (music, art, drama)

Areas of Interaction (AOI)
• Approaches to Learning (ATL) – provides students with the tools to take responsibility for their own learning
• Community and Service – develops community awareness, involvement, service and reflection
• Human Ingenuity – explores the way the human mind has influenced the world
• Environments – considers how humans interact with the world and the interrelationships of different environments
• Health and Social Education – develops a sense of responsibility for the well-being of themselves and others

Assessment:  The MYP uses a criterion-based assessment system.  Each subject group has a different set of criteria that are used to determine a final 1-7 grade for each subject.  Schools are required to use the established criteria for grade 10, providing an international standard, but teachers may modify the criteria in grades 6-9.  When a school becomes an authorized MYP school, student work can be moderated and awarded an MYP certificate.
