Science Department Philosophy

The Science Department at Tashkent International School believes that students should be provided with learning opportunities that engage them in an inquiry-based science education. We believe that the teaching and learning of scientific concepts and processes should be unified by providing a variety of experiences that include the consideration of moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology.

ScienceProgram of Study
Grade 6: Integrated Science
Integrated Science emphasizes holistic learning and encourages the development and acquisition of scientific inquiry skills and transferable thinking skills. Students are introduced to the concept of fair testing through studies of scientific models, levers and pulleys, food and nutrition, and solar energy.

Grade 7: Life Science
Life Science helps students to explore the nature of scientific inquiry and the complex interactions taking place within individuals, populations, species, ecosystems and the biosphere. These relationships are put in context by examining ecological, evolutionary and cell theories.

Grade 8: Earth Science
Students continue to integrate conceptual understanding and procedural understanding through the discovery of astronomy, geology, meteorology, oceanography and introductory chemistry. Personal, social and global awareness is emphasized through studies of the environment.

Grades 9 and 10: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
In both grades 9 and 10 students are offered semester-long courses in biology, chemistry and physics. Students continue to strengthen their technological skills in scientific contexts that also allow them to develop intercultural awareness and communication skills.

Grades 11 and 12: IB Diploma Sciences
Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered at both Standard and Higher Levels. Students continue to develop technology and communication skills while becoming more specialized and knowledgeable in one or two of the scientific disciplines. Students are also encouraged to consider the moral responsibilities of scientists and the use of the scientific capacity for developing sustainable societies.
