Primary Years Program

Primary Years Programme

The elementary school at Tashkent International School uses curriculum specifically developed for international primary education. Adopted by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as their worldwide Primary Years Programme (PYP), the curriculum leads to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 6 through 10 and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma for grades 11 and 12.

TIS is the only school in Uzbekistan authorized to use the IB curriculum for preschool through grade 5.

Through both the curriculum and our teaching, the elementary school at TIS aspires to develop the intellectual, emotional and physical potential of each child in a secure and stimulating environment.

International perspective

In order to make the most of the diverse background and experience of our students, the elementary school curriculum synthesizes the best practices from educational systems around the world and aims to ease a student’s transition between schools, whether they are entering or leaving TIS.

Inquiry based

The teaching methods used at the elementary school build on a student’s individual knowledge and interests. Using a well-developed curriculum, the teaching emphasizes learning how to learn and how to discover by using both traditional and contemporary media.

Integrated

The subject areas of math, language arts, science and social studies are taught through interdisciplinary themes to help students make connections between subjects. Through this method, teachers facilitate a more effective learning pattern.

Individualized

Using the PYP framework, the elementary school has developed a detailed program of inquiry that reflects the multinational composition of the TIS population and its location in Uzbekistan.

The elementary school aims to nurture globally-minded citizens who are:

  • Communicators
  • Thinkers
  • Inquirers
  • Risk-takers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Principled
  • Caring
  • Open-minded
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

At the center of our curriculum are key concepts such as:

  • What is it like? (form)
  • How does it work? (function)
  • Why is it like it is? (causation)
  • How is it changing? (change)
  • How is it connected to other things? (connection)
  • What are the points of view? (perspective)
  • What is our responsibility? (responsibility)
  • How do we know? (reflection)

The following skills are developed and fostered:

  • Thinking
  • Communication
  • Socializing
  • Research
  • Self-management

Students in the Primary Years Programme are encouraged to put what they learned into practice through service to the school community, the local community and the global community.
