TIS News - Friday, April 11

Tanya Sommerville
Dear TIS Community,
I want to invite all parents and guardians to the Tashkent International Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, April 21, 2022 in the TIS Park starting at 17:00. The annual meeting takes place every April. The purpose of the meeting is to elect Trustees to the School Board. At the same meeting, the Board Chair and Director will be giving reports on the educational, financial, and legal aspects of the school.
There is one position up for reelection this year on the board. Trustees serve for terms of two years. It is a voluntary position, and trustees usually devote 2 hours per month for the regular meeting and an additional 2-5 hours per month of committee work and other tasks. Trustees are “entrusted” with the future of the school. They are the governing body responsible for the long-term fiduciary and sustainability of the school.
If you are interested in becoming a potential candidate, please email your interest to Yuliya Kartashova (execassistant@tashschool.org) by Friday, April 15. The School Board Governance Committee will arrange a meeting with all potential candidates to give them a better idea of what the role entails and determine their suitability for the position. TIS policy dictates there is no campaigning allowed, and each candidate will give a short introductory speech at the AGM before a secret paper ballot. Parents or guardians must be present at the AGM to vote.
Serving on the school board can be a rewarding experience. I hope there is some interest from the community to help us out.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can always contact TIS Director Bill Kralovec (director@tashschool.org) or +998 90 185 8410.
Sincerely,
Tanya Sommerville
TIS Board Chair

Book Character Day - April 21
On Thursday 21 April we will be celebrating all the fantastic characters from the books we read. Ms. Sayyora and the library team have been planning some exciting activities to connect our Secondary students to our Elementary students, and to give everyone a chance to explore books and reading. The activities will include buddy readings and scavenger hunts. We are encouraging all Elementary students to come to school dressed as their favorite book character. We look forward to some amazing costumes and a great celebration of books!

Connect with the Grade 12s
Last week, TIS Grade 12 students met with classes across the Elementary School. This was a chance to create connections between our younger students and our students who are about to take the IB Diploma exams and graduate. The Elementary students had many questions about what the IB Diploma was like, and what our Grade 12 students planned to do after they graduate. There was also some highly competitive Duck, Duck, Goose and hula hooping.

New Mud Kitchen in PS1 and PS2
Our PS1 and PS2 students have been very busy working in their new Mud Kitchen, cooking up all sorts of good things. This Mud Kitchen was built by Grade 10 student Hugo Nelson as part of his Middle Years Programme Personal Project. It is powerful to see this type of connection and have Secondary students and PreSchool students inspiring creativity in each other.

There is no such thing as bad weather
The long rainy period did not mean that we could not get outside and explore. Many of our students had waterproof clothes and shoes and were able to continue learning and engaging outside. Please make sure that you have clothing for all weather conditions.

Dear families,
I hope this message finds you and your family in good health, enjoying the spring weather. There are a number of big events coming up very fast so please continue reading.
PTSCs
Our first in-person Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences in over two years, will be taking place on Wednesday, 20th April. By tomorrow, 12th April, you will have received your child’s report with information about their achievement, ATL skills and learning dispositions. The conferences are organized by alphabetical order (family names) though if this creates an obstacle for you, please let Ms Alyona know and we will work out a solution. Conferences will take place in the gym. Please do not forget that this counts as a school day and students are expected to attend with their parent(s). The timings are as follows:
- 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. students with surnames beginning A-H
- 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. students with surnames beginning I-N
- 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. students with surnames beginning O-Z
School Without Walls
Another sign of our road to recovery is the return of overnight school trips. We had hoped to run these trips at the beginning of the school year but with high Covid numbers we had to postpone them to later in the year. Having done a lot of research and fact finding, we have concluded that it is safe to run a shortened version of the trips before the end of the year. Grade 6 to 11 will be going on an overnight trip to the following destinations on May, 5 to 6. Detailed itineraries will be shared shortly. All trips are to destinations close to Tashkent, with the average time being 1.5 hours. Trips will be to the following locations:
- Grade 6 and 7 - Surpa mountain resort in Chimgan (triangle huts)
- Grade 8 - Kumushkan (near Parkent)
- Grade 9 - Chimgan Aksay valley
- Grade 10 - Yangikurgan (near Chimgan)
- Grade 11 - LAYNER Mountain Resort near Chimgan

We are holding a parent information evening on 20 April, starting with a brief general introduction followed by Grade Level specific meetings.
- 18.00 General Information in the MPR
- 18.20 Grade Level specific meetings (locations published on the evening)
- 19.00 Onwards - Admin staff available for follow up questions if needed.
Our seniors
Our seniors are counting down until their last official day of school, which will be the 22nd April. Today was another milestone, taking their cap and gown photos. On the 22nd, they will have a final farewell assembly, followed by a meal in a restaurant in Anchor Park. Their official IB exams will be starting the week after, on 28th for all Physics students. Please join me in wishing them the best of luck.

TEDx Youth
TIS was proud to host our 2nd TEDxYouth@TashkentIntlSchool event, which introduced students from grades 9-12, each one speaking passionately about a subject related to the theme of "Limitless". Ideas, beliefs, and stories shape our communities and inspire others to take positive conscious action. We are very proud of our TEDxYouth student-speakers who took the risk to share their ideas and stories. Please watch out for the official posting of the TEDx Youth videos from all the ‘speakers’. A special thank you goes to our organizers, Mrs. Anca Toma and Grade 11 student Apoorva without whom this event would not have been possible.

Other News
Korean In K-pop activity is about learning Korean language with K-pop and Korean culture. We had a Korean culture experience event ; trying Hanbok, Korean traditional costumes on Friday 18th March at school. There are non-Korean speaking students who learn Korean and Korean students as volunteers. They said it was an exciting experience to try Korean traditional costumes which they had always wished to try. It was fun and a special experience of cultural diversity.
