Statement of Philosophy

Tashkent International School’s Athletic Program is renowned across the region for its commitment to excellence and its immense community support. TIS prides itself on our facilities, including two large gymnasiums with two basketball and volleyball courts. Ten badminton courts, two new all-weather football fields, and a multipost area. Our campus also features a fitness studio and an outdoor fitness area.

The purpose of the Owls Athletics Program is to foster the social, emotional, physical, and moral development of the student-athlete participant, along with fostering the IB Learner Profile. All participants are expected to display the ideals of sportsmanship, ethics, and respect.

Participation in our Athletics program is a privilege and all who participate must represent the TIS community positively. Together, coaches, participants, parents, and athletes are committed to being exemplary in all that we do!

Secondary School Competitive

Middle School
Students in grades 6 & 7 will have an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge of their chosen sport. Middle School students must commit to two training sessions per week and weekend games to represent TIS in any chosen sport. Students in Middle School will have the opportunity to travel to CEESA Cross Country.

Junior Varsity
Students in grades 8 & 9 will be selected to represent TIS at both local and international tournaments. Junior Varsity student-athletes must commit to two training sessions per week and games on weekends. This is an extension activity to enable our more serious and competitive athletes the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge. Junior Varsity teams compete both locally and internationally.

Varsity
Students in grades 9 – 12 will have an opportunity to try-out to represent TIS at the Varsity level. Varsity teams train a minimum of three times a week, including either a morning or evening session and will also have weekend games. Varsity teams compete both locally and internationally. Where possible, arrangements will be made to accommodate students that are unsuccessful in making the travelling team to continue to train and compete locally.

International Competitions

TIS has a strong athletic tradition with a number of international schools throughout the Central Asia region. We are a founding member of Central Asian Federation of Athletics, Arts and Activities (CAFA) and a full member school of the Central Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA).

Varsity & Junior Varsity teams participate in CAFA with schools from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. These teams participate in Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Track & Field and Cross Country. We are a full member of the Central Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA) and have, in the past, participated in athletic and activity events in a limited capacity.

Local Competitions

TIS has established and coordinates local Football, Basketball and Volleyball competitions as well as annual Cross-Country and Track & Field meets. A variety of schools and clubs are invited to participate in an organized schedule of friendly games. Each team sport season culminates with a season-ending tournament. These games and tournaments are designed to enable TIS students to compete against local teams within a respectful environment to help foster positive relationships. Elementary Students will generally play a round-robin formatted tournament at the end of the season with local schools and clubs.

Recreational Program:

These occur within our activity trimester and provide students with skill instruction in a non-competitive situation. Focus is placed on developing the skills and attitudes necessary to participate in a variety of sporting activities. These opportunities will vary based on facility and resource availability. Students can sign-up for new activities each trimester. Information on this program can be found on the school website and in the Activities Coordinator’s office in the Administration Office.

Elementary School Competitive

Students in Grades 3 – 5 will be given an opportunity to represent TIS within a competitive age-appropriate experience. Often students will have an opportunity to play on a team coached by one of our Secondary students. These students will prepare their teams to participate in a tournament against local schools. All students interested in playing will be included in this program,. These coincide with the after school activities calendar; Basketball in Trimester 1 and Football in Trimester 3.
